Safety Tips for Your Underground/Parking Garage Door

Commercial overhead doors are typically used in a daily basis and operating cycles can exceed a hundred times a day. Given its size, functionality and daily use, it is a good idea to ensure that your overhead door is operating safely and efficiently.

Begley Overhead Doors has some high-level safety tips when it comes to commercial garage door safety requirements.

Ensure it is safe before proceeding

An often overlooked practice is to ensure the commercial overhead door is completely open before entering or exiting. It is common to rush through the gateway once you have enough space, whether it is due to impatience or lack of time.

Once the door is in the fully open position, this is when it is safer to proceed. This increases your chance of security and safety before proceeding.

Testing auto-reverse features

Although it is a good practice to test out all features that come with your commercial parking garage door, safety is one of the more important ones. If you rely on your overhead door to function automatically and to open when it detects something, then it is important to test out its reliability regularly.

Ask an expert if your overhead door has safety features installed and operating correctly.

Use a pedestrian door instead of an overhead door

It can be tempting to just walk under a commercial garage door, especially when it automatically opens at your detection. However, it is good practice to utilize an ingress/egress door to enter and exit if there is one and limit using the commercial overhead door to vehicles only.

This suggestion is based on the safety and control that comes with a pedestrian door as opposed to an overhead door. Despite commercial underground garage doors being reliable and durable, just like any system, you want to be as careful as possible.

Inspect your overhead doors regularly

One of the most important safety tips is to inspect your commercial garage doors regularly. Checking your springs, cables, rollers and pulleys should be a common practice to determine if there are any damages or issues. It is recommended that this inspection is done on a regular basis depending on the type of overhead door you have and the climate in which it operates.

Some commercial overhead doors are used upwards of 300-500 times a day versus others that are used a couple of times a day, these factors may alter how often you would need a maintenance check.

You may be tempted to check the overhead door yourself but this is strongly advised against as a lot of the pieces that manoeuvre the door are held under extreme tension. If they break free, they could cause fatal injuries.
